The Condachou cooperage, specialists in barrel refurbishment!
Founded in 1955, Condachou is one of the last independent family-run cooperages in France, now in its third generation.
Aware of the environmental impact of the industry and driven by a philosophy rooted in sustainable development, the second generation of the Condachou family decided to specialise in top-of-the-range barrel refurbishment in the mid-1990s in order to limit tree cutting.
After many years of research and development, the Condachou family were able to perfect an unrivalled process for breathing new life into 225 to 600 litre barrels (at least 27 mm thick) deemed unsuitable for maturing wines or spirits.
By planing several millimetres down the inside of the barrel, we recover virgin wood that allows natural micro-oxygenation to return.
After planing, the barrels are toasted again (at different intensities to suit individual needs) to recover the desired aromas.
The barrels can then be used for twice as long as usual.
This is a technical, ecological and economical service (on average 4 times more economical than new barrels).
