Description
Lebanon is one of the earliest sites of wine production. As far back as 7000 BC early Lebanese cultures promoted the vine and wine but it was the Phoenicians, a Semitic people and the forebears of the modern Lebanese trader, who were arguably the world’s first wine merchants bottling and shipping their treasure from their power bases in Byblos, Sidon and Tyre as early as 3000BC. Lebanon’s wine heritage is also famously represented in historic Baalbek, the ancient Roman city at the Eastern end of the Bekaa Valley – Lebanon’s vinicultural heartland – where the impressive Temple of Bacchus, the Roman god of wines, still stands. There are nearly 45 wineries of varying size at work in Lebanon today, producing over 10 million bottles. The Union Vinicole du Liban (UVL), the country’s association of wine producers was founded in 1997 one year after the adherence of Lebanon at the International Organization of Vine and Wine. The objective of the UVL is to consolidate and develop Lebanon’s image as a wine producing country by highlighting its proud history and promoting its potential. The UVL gives voice to Lebanon’s wine producers, uniting them in one harmonized entity and defending their interests. It has developed legitimacy for Lebanon’s export ambitions within the EU and other international markets like the US and Canada
